From Ancient Greek πιμελή (pimelḗ, fat) for being a mineral with a greasy appearance, +‎ -ite.

  1. (mineralogy, outdated) A hexagonal mineral containing hydrogen, nickel, oxygen, and silicon.

Usage notes

  • The name pimelite was rejected in 2006 as a name as a result of confusion between it and nickel-dominant smectite or nickel-bearing talc.
