First attested in 1390 (parelisia). From Old French parleisie, from Latin paralysis, from Ancient Greek παράλυσις (parálusis, palsy), from παραλύω (paralúō, to disable on one side), from παρα- (para-, beside) + λύω (lúō, loosen). Doublet of parálise.
