[edit]Borrowed from Koine Greek περιηγητής (periēgētḗs, “a writer of periegeses; a guide”), from Ancient Greek περι- (peri-, “around, surrounding”) + ἡγητής (hēgētḗs, “a guide”) (from ἡγέομαι (hēgéomai, “to lead”) + -τής (-tḗs, suffix forming agent nouns)), from περιηγεῖσθαι (periēgeîsthai, “to lead around”).
