[edit]Equivalent to pekel (“brine”) or pekelen (“to brine”) + zonde (“sin”). The first part of the compound is a folk-etymological interpretation of Latin peccatillum (“minor sin”), the diminutive of Latin peccatum (“sin, error, fault”), from Latin peccō (“I sin, offend”), from Proto-Indo-European verbal root *ped- (“to walk, fall, stumble”).
