From Western Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *paŋpaŋ (steep slope (as of riverbank or mountain)). Compare Ilocano pangpang (ridge), Kapampangan pangpang (riverbank), Bikol Central pangpang (riverbank), Cebuano pangpang (cliff), Maranao pampang (cliff), and Malagasy fampana (abyss).
