Albanian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Borrowed through Vulgar Latin from Latin baptizō (“I baptize”) with unclear phonological development.[1] Topalli suggests contamination from bagëm (“anointing oil, unction”).[2] Orel suggests a combination of dissimilation and shift of voicedness.[3] Derived from Ancient Greek βαπτίζω (baptízō, “to dip, plunge, draw wine”), from βάπτω (báptō, “to dip, dye, imbue”).
