Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed through Vulgar Latin from Latin baptizō (I baptize) with unclear phonological development.[1] Topalli suggests contamination from bagëm (anointing oil, unction).[2] Orel suggests a combination of dissimilation and shift of voicedness.[3] Derived from Ancient Greek βαπτίζω (baptízō, to dip, plunge, draw wine), from βάπτω (báptō, to dip, dye, imbue).
