From Proto-Finnic *pähkä via later variant *pähkäs, from Proto-Finno-Permic *päškɜ. Cognates include Finnish pähkinä, Votic pähtšene, Estonian pähkel, Veps pähkim, Ingrian päähkänä, Erzya пеште (pešťe), Moksha пяште (päšťe), Eastern Mari пӱкш (pükš), Udmurt пашпу (pašpu, hazelnut bush) and possibly also Komi-Zyrian пашкан (paškan, rosehip).
