[edit]From Proto-Finnic *pähkele, from Proto-Finno-Permic *päškɜ. Cognates include Finnish pähkinä, Votic pähtšene, Livonian pē’gõz, Veps pähkim, Ingrian päähkänä, Erzya пеште (pešťe), Moksha пяште (päšťe), Eastern Mari пӱкш (pükš), Udmurt пашпу (pašpu, “hazelnut bush”) and possibly also Komi-Zyrian пашкан (paškan, “rosehip”).
