[edit]From Latin pardus, from Ancient Greek πάρδος (párdos, “male panther”), from the same source (probably Iranian) as Sanskrit पृदाकु (pṛ́dāku, “panther, tiger, snake”) and Persian پلنگ (palang, “panther”).
