Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Iranian *ni- + Proto-Iranian *yaš- (“to show, appear”), with further connections outside of Indo-Iranian uncertain. Not from Proto-Indo-European *h₃ekʷ- (“to see”), despite superficial phonetic and semantic similarity. Compare Sanskrit यक्ष (yakṣa, “spiritual apparition”).
