năm (year) +‎ Thìn (Dragon, as in the Chinese calendar) +‎ bão lụt (storms and floods). It is generally believed that the term is in reference of the year 1904, when Southern Vietnam was hit by one of the most destructive storm ever recorded in its history on 1 May 1904.
