From Middle Dutch mooy, moy, from Old Dutch mōi (beautiful, trim, neat, attested in nicknames), further origin uncertain; possibly from Proto-West Germanic *mauwī (clean, washed), perhaps from Proto-Germanic *mawjaz, *maujaz, from Proto-Indo-European *mewH- (to wet, wash).
