[edit]Etymology
[edit]- (Clitopilus): First used by Czech botanist Jan Bezděk in 1901.[1] The name probably refers to the fact that the fungus often grows in moss (Czech mech).
- (moss animal): Calque of translingual Bryozoa, from Ancient Greek βρύον (brúon, “moss”) + ζῷα (zôia), which is a plural of ζῷον (zôion, “animal”). It refers to the fact that colonies of some species of these animals resemble moss (Czech mech).[2]
- (Rosa × centifolia var. muscosa): Refers to the moss-like surface of the sepal.
Pronunciation

[edit]mechovka f
- Clitopilus (genus of fungi in the family Entolomataceae)

- Rosa × centifolia var. muscosa (a kind of a hybrid rose)

Usage notes
[edit]- Czech names of Bryozoa and some of its subgroups are often used ambiguously. While some authors use the name mechovky for the whole phylum Bryozoa,[3] others call them mechovci, leaving the name mechovky only for its class Phylactolaemata.[4] Then singular mechovka refers to any representative of the groups. Besides this, the name mechovka is also used for many (but not all) of the genera from various classes of the phylum Bryozoa.[5]
