[edit]From Dutch maarschalk (compare Afrikaans maarskalk), from Middle Dutch maerschalc, maerscalc, marscalc, from Old Dutch mariskalk, from Proto-West Germanic *marhaskalk (compare French maréchal), from Proto-Germanic *marhaz (“horse”) + *skalkaz (“servant, knight”).
