[edit]Cognate to Albanian marrë; both from Proto-Albanian *marsa[1] (from Proto-Indo-European *mergʷ- (“to flicker; to darken; to be dark”); Proto-Indo-European *h₂mergʷ- (“dark”)).
Cognate to Proto-Slavic *morkъ (“darkness”), *morxъ (“dusk, fog”), Proto-Slavic *mergъ (“brown”), Proto-Germanic *merkuz (“dark”), Ancient Greek ἀμορβός (amorbós, “dark”), Lithuanian márgas (“colorful”). Also related to Albanian murg (“dark”), murgët (also derived from Proto-Indo-European *mergʷ- (“to flicker; to darken; to be dark”)).
