Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Ottoman Turkish محبوس (mahbus, “imprisoned, a prisoner, given in mortmain for the service of God”),[1][2] from Arabic مَحْبُوس (maḥbūs), passive participle of حَبَسَ (ḥabasa, “to imprison, to hold back”).[3]
