[edit]From Old Norse mánuðr, variant of mánaðr, from Proto-Germanic *mēnōþs (“month”), from a derivative of Proto-Indo-European *mḗh₁n̥s (“moon, month”). See also máni. Cognate with Faroese mánaður, Danish and Norwegian Bokmål måned and Swedish and Norwegian Nynorsk månad, English month, Old English mōnaþ, German Monat, Dutch maand.
