Derived from Proto-Indo-European *(s)leuǵ- (to crawl, slide), see also Dutch sluiken (to creep, smuggle, act clandestinely).[1] Compare Russian лы́жа (lýža, ski), Ukrainian ли́жа (lýža, ski), Polish łyżwa (ice skate).
