From Old Swedish liūgha, from Old Norse ljúga, from Proto-Germanic *leuganą, from Proto-Indo-European *lewgʰ- (to tell a lie). Cognate with Danish lyve, Faroese ljúgva (whence lúgva), Icelandic ljúga, Norwegian Bokmål lyve and Norwegian Nynorsk ljuga.
