- a colloquial clipping of Spanish abuela (“grandmother”) + -ng. See also lelong, ninang, ninong, nana, tata, nanang, tatang, tiya, tiyo, tiyang, tiyong, ateng, kuyang, dikong, ditseng.
- Hokkien 老人 (lāu-lâng, “old folk/s”) according to Manuel (1948).[1]
