[edit]Etymology
[edit]Either from the following:
- From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *əmpu (“grandparent/grandchild (recipr.); ancestor; lord, master, owner”); compare Malay punya (“owner; to have”).[1]
- From Hokkien, possibly 引婆 (ín-pô),[2][3] or 姆婆 (ḿ-pô)[4] recorded in the Dictionario Hispanico Sinicum (1626-1642) as “ìn pō” and “m̄ pō”.[4]
Zorc (1985) records both etymologies but finds the Chinese etymology as less likely.[5]
