Latin
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From a Proto-Italic *lasko-, itself from Proto-Indo-European *lh₂s-ko- (“desirous”), from *leh₂s- (“to be eager”) (though others, including Beekes and Kroonen, have expressed doubt about the existence of the root and its assigned descendants), + -īvus (“adjectival suffix”). Cognate with Old Irish lainn (“eager”), Ancient Greek λῐλαίομαι (lilaíomai, “to desire strongly”), Lithuanian lokšnùs (“sensitive”), Proto-Slavic *lasъ (“avaricious”).[1]
