[edit]Borrowed from Old Saxon lugina, from Proto-Germanic *luginō, cognate with Old English lyġen, Old High German lugina. Norwegian lygn and Swedish lögn are also borrowed from Old Saxon. The noun is derived from the verb *leuganą (“to lie”).
