[edit]kylmä (“cold”) + veri (“blood”) + hevonen (“horse”), Calque of French cheval à sang froid (“work horse”) via Swedish kallblodshäst (“work horse”), according to old classification of horses in which strong and heavy workhorses were considered cold-blooded and faster and more lightly-built breeds were considered warm-blooded.
