kvassi
Appearance
Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Russian ква́с (kvás, “kvass”), from Old East Slavic квасъ (kvasŭ), from Proto-Slavic *kvasъ.
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]kvassi
- kvass (traditional fermented Russian and Ukrainian beverage with little or no alcohol, usually made from bread)
- Synonym: taari
Usage notes
[edit]kvassi very closely resembles a traditional Finnish beverage called kalja or kotikalja, the main difference being that kvassi is made of bread whereas kalja is made of malt. The metonymic use of kalja for kvass is thus common.
