Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Albanian *krau, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱreh₂u, *ḱrh₂eu (limb). Close to Latin crūs.[1] Alternatively from archaic krahi, definite krai (Buzuku), from South Slavic, from Proto-Slavic *krajь (end; rim, edge; region) (compare Serbo-Croatian krȃj, Bulgarian край (kraj)). Similar sense development in Bulgarian край (kraj), крайник (krajnik), краиште (kraište, limb).[2]
