Etymology

[edit]

Probably from Old Norse klǫpp. Attested in Glossarium Norvagicum of Erik Pontoppidan (1749) and by Jacob Nicolai Wilse in his dictionary of Spydeberg dialect (1780), in both cases written as klop because of Danish spelling rules. Also attested in Danish text of Gerhard Schøning in his description of Norwegian countryside (1774). Probably not etymologically related to English clapper bridge.
