From the German surname, from Middle Low German klopper (“clapper, hammer, bobbin”), from the medieval name Chlodobert, from Frankish for "famously bright," from Proto-Germanic derivatives of Proto-Indo-European *ḱlu-tó-s (“famous”) << *ḱlew- (“to hear”) + *bʰerHǵ- (“to be bright, shine”). Compare Proto-Germanic *hleumô (“hearing”) and *berhtaz (“shining, bright”).
