[edit]An iterative formed from Early New High German kletten, from Proto-Indo-European *gleyt- (“to cling to, cleave, stick”), from *gley- (“to stick, smear”). Related to Klette (“burr”) and Kleid (“dress”) (DWDS). Cognate with Hunsrik klettre.
