Probably borrowed from Old Turkic [Term?], from [script needed] (*qat, berry) +‎ [script needed] (-γan, nominal suffix). Compare Kipchak [script needed] (kataγan, common chicory; endive),Yakut [script needed] (kı̈tı̈an, common juniper), Turkmen gataňňyr (a particular plant), Tatar [script needed] (qatı̈rgan, hawthorn) (dialectal), Kyrgyz [script needed] (qatrang, a particular berry plant) (dialectal). First attested in c. 1395.[1]
