[edit]From Ottoman Turkish قرهلامه (ḳaralama, “a writing a calligraphic exercise, a schoolboy's calligraphic exercise”),[1] from Ottoman Turkish قره (ḳara, “black”), from Proto-Turkic *kara (“black”),[2][3] morphologically kara + -la + -ma.
