From Proto-Oceanic *tanum (compare with Tahitian tanu “to dig, to sow seeds”, Maori tanu “to plant, to bury”, Rarotongan tanu “to plant, to till, to cultivate land”, Samoan tanu)[1] from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *tanəm (“to plant” – compare with Malay tanam “to plant [of trees etc], to bury”, Chamorro tanom, Cebuano tanom, Tagalog tanim “planting, harbouring of a grudge”),[2][3] from Proto-Austronesian *CaNəm (bury).
