From Proto-Balto-Slavic *kam⁽ˀ⁾as, from Proto-Indo-European *kem- (to press), see also kamuoti (to torture), Proto-Germanic *hamjaną (to hinder, obstruct).[1]

Probably cognate with Latvian kamols and Russian ком (kom).
