Etymology
[edit]According to Pokorny, from Proto-Indo-European *kem- (“to press”), see also Proto-Germanic *hamjaną (“to hinder, obstruct”).[1]

- (transitive) to cause discomfort or suffering continuously or long-term

[edit]The degree of intensity ranges from mild (e.g. cold temperature, a persistent cough) to excruciating (e.g. chronic pain).
