According to Pokorny, from Proto-Indo-European *kem- (to press), see also Proto-Germanic *hamjaną (to hinder, obstruct).[1]

kamúoti (third-person present tense kamúoja, third-person past tense kamãvo)

  1. (transitive) to cause discomfort or suffering continuously or long-term
    Mane kamuoja kosulys.
    A cough is making me suffer.
  2. (transitive) to torture

Usage notes

The degree of intensity ranges from mild (e.g. cold temperature, a persistent cough) to excruciating (e.g. chronic pain).
