From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *r-kəw ~ hu (to steal). Cognate with Burmese ခိုး (hkui:, to steal), Old Chinese (*kʰoːs, to rob, robber), Tibetan རྐུ (rku, to steal), Nuosu (ku, to steal), Lisu ꓘꓴꓽ (kʰù, to steal), Tangut 𘝚 (*kjwɨr¹, to steal), Horpa ʂkə (to steal), Japhug mɯrkɯ (to steal), Naxi kv (to steal), Jingpho lagu (to steal), and Rawang kø̄e (to steal). Compare Lhao Vo khug', Zaiwa kau, Longchuan Achang xau³¹ and Hpon kʰò ~ kʰù.

Cognate with Burmese မီးခိုး (mi:hkui:, smoke), Old Chinese (*qʰun, to smoke), Nuosu (mu gu, smoke), Lisu ꓘꓴꓽ (kʰù, smoke), Tshangla མུ་གུ (mu gu, smoke), Tangut 𗿉 (*ɣju¹, smoke), Japhug tɤ-kʰɯ (smoke), Naxi meel kee (smoke), Jingpho wankhut (smoke). Compare Lhao Vo myi: khug', Zaiwa myikau, Longchuan Achang ni³¹xau³¹ and Hpon mèʔ kʰù ~ mìʔ kʰù. As seen in cognates, there exists a common structure "fire-smoke" in the vast majority of Tibeto-Burman languages, as well as in the Pela form below.
