[edit]From Proto-Tocharian *käs- (whence Tocharian B käs-), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)gʷes- (“to extinguish, become extinguished”). Cognate with Lithuanian gesti, Sanskrit जासयति (jāsayati), and Ancient Greek σβέννῡμι (sbénnūmi).
