From Vulgar Latin germānus (“brother”), from Latin germānus (“of siblings”), from germen (“sprout, bud”), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵénh₁mn̥ (“offspring, seed”), from *ǵenh₁- (“to beget, to give birth”). Cognate with Old Leonese and Old Spanish ermano.
