Etymology

From Arabic آخَر (ʔāḵar). Compare Hebrew אחר (ʾaḥēr). The plural oħrajn is unusual in that the plural ending -in seems to have been added to the feminine ending (rather than replacing it as *oħrin). This might have to do with the fact that -a here goes back to Arabic long -ā, provided that the formation is of old age.

Usage notes

• The plural is always oħrajn in nominalised use (“others”). In adjectival use it can be oħrajn or oħra.
• While status congruence of adjectives is otherwise archaic in Maltese (except in fixed terms and sometimes after pronominal suffixes), ieħor still generally takes the definite article when referring to determinate nouns. Thus: mara oħra (“another woman”), il-mara l-oħra (“the other woman”).
