[edit]From Proto-Semitic *ʕiṣ́- (“tree”). Cognate with Arabic عِضّ (ʕiḍḍ, “thorny trees, shrubs”), عُضّ (ʕuḍḍ, “thick coarse trees”) and Biblical Hebrew עֵץ (ʕeṣ, “tree, wood”).
