From Proto-Finnic *humar, from Proto-Finno-Permic *šumare. Cognates include Erzya човар (čovar) and Eastern Mari шуар (šuar). The medial -h- is irregular and might have developed through an itself irregular lengthening of the -u- vowel.[1]
