[edit]From Old Norse hlíta (“to rely on, trust, abide by”), according to Pokorny, possibly ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱley- (“to lean, incline”).[1]
Cognate with Swedish lita (“to trust, rely on, depend on, confide in”), Danish lide (“to trust”), and English lite (“to expect, wait”).
