Etymology

From Low German and Middle Low German harsch, from a Proto-Germanic derivative of Proto-Indo-European *kars- (to scratch, scrape, rub, card); see also Russian короста (korosta, to itch), Old Church Slavonic краста (krasta), Lithuanian karsiu (to comb).

Compare English harsh, which is also borrowed from Middle Low German.
