From Proto-Austroasiatic *hoːpˀ. Cognate with Mon ဟာပ် (hap, to eat), Shwe Palaung ဟာပ် (to eat (curry)), Koho hup (to eat), Khasi kahup (to gulp, gobble) and Khmer ហូប (houp, to eat).
