Proto-West Germanic *haifsti, from Proto-Germanic *haifstiz (violence). Akin to Old Saxon hāste (haste), Old Norse heifst (hatred), Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐌹𐍆𐍃𐍄𐍃 (haifsts, quarrel), Lithuanian kaipstù, kaiptī (to be dizzy).
