[edit]Usually considered to be from Common Turkic *yapgut (“stuffing, matted mass of hair or wool”)[1] through a Turkic language before the times of the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin (at the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries), cognate with gyapjú (“wool”).[2][3] However Benkő states the word is isolated in Karakhanid.
