Etymology

Probably from an affixed form of the root that gave rise to xuống (“to go downwards, to descend”).

Attested in the Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latinum (1651), a dictionary based chiefly on the Northern dialects, as giuống, glossed with Latin deſcendo (“to descend”). Attested in Đại Nam quấc âm tự vị (1895), a dictionary based chiefly on the Southern dialects, as giuống, glossed nhấc ra khỏi bếp (“to put down from the stove”), noted as tiếng ít dùng ("uncommon word"), so most likely already obsolete or rare in the Southern dialects by then.

Attested in Từ điển phương ngữ Huế ("A Dictionary of the Hue dialect(s)", 2017) with the unetymological spelling duống, glossed as nhấc (xuống) (“to put down”).
