Etymology 1

[edit]

From Middle Dutch geburen, from Old Dutch geburien (to happen, occur), from Proto-West Germanic *gaburjan, from Proto-Germanic *gaburjaną. Equivalent to ge- +‎ beuren.

Cognate with West Frisian barre (to happen) and German gebühren (to be due, owed); further with Low German geböhren and Old English ġebyrian, which show both of these senses.
