gaule
Appearance
French
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Middle French gaule, gaulle, from Old French gaule, waulle (“long pole, rod”), from Frankish *walu (“stick”), from Proto-Germanic *waluz (“stick, root”), from Proto-Indo-European *wel- (“to turn, wind, roll”).
Cognate with Gothic 𐍅𐌰𐌻𐌿𐍃 (walus, “staff, rod”), Old Norse valr (“round rod”), North Frisian waal (“rod, stick”), Old English walu (“ridge, bank, rib, comb of helmet, weal, mark of a blow”). More at wale, weal.
