[edit]From Old Galician-Portuguese garvanço, from ervanço, from an Indo-European substrate language (Proto-Germanic *arwīts (“pea”), Latin ervum (“vetch”)) and ultimately possibly a Mediterranean borrowing cognate with Ancient Greek ἐρέβινθος (erébinthos).[1]
Cognate with dialectal Portuguese ervanço, Spanish garbanzo.
