From Middle High German vliezen, from Old High German fliozan, from Proto-West Germanic *fleutan, from Proto-Germanic *fleutaną, akin to English fleet (verb), Old Saxon fliotan and Dutch vlieten.

Before 1996, the conjugated forms floss and flosst were spelled floß and floßt respectively. Since the 1996 German Spelling Reform, though, they are spelled with ss.
